We are Tuckahoe.

We know Tuckahoe is more than just a neighborhood or an elementary school. It’s screen porches instead of screens. Its kids riding bikes as “be home by dinner” echoes across the yard. It’s neighbors waving from golf carts, parents catching up at the bus stop, and families returning to the same streets they once called home. In an age when so many places feel like they’ve left the best of the past behind, Tuckahoe holds fast. That’s why we brought this to life— to give a name to what already existed, celebrate the roots that connect us and the every day magic that shapes our families, and to invite anyone who calls this place home to take part in the story.

So that for generations to come, when someone asks where in Richmond you’re from, you can answer with a single word that carries the tale of centuries: Tuckahoe.

THE HISTORY

Long before America had its name, this place had one: Tuckahoe. The Powhatan people used the word for the arrow arum root — a plant known for its strong root system that holds fast and nourishes what grows above. Found on the banks of the James, notes from archives that predate the American Revolution refer to this special place we call home as “Tuckahoe.” Over time, that name became deeply tied to these creeks and streets. Families have rooted here for generations, raising children in the same yards their grandparents once played in. Tuckahoe District came to life to honor that story — to carry forward the deep roots of a community that has always been more than geography. It is an offering to something we knew already existed, but that we can all now enjoy.
